A Place Where We Meet: The Story Behind Mayvn, Angel

Why Mayvn? The Story Behind Angel's Calmest Café

Some cafés are built for speed, order, take your cup, keep moving. Mayvn was built for the opposite. It's a place to slow down, settle in and stay a while. A place where people meet, ideas grow and connections form. That's the whole idea, and it's right there in the name we go by: Mayvn — where we meet.

You'll find us on the ground floor at 4 Pentonville Road, a few minutes from Angel station. This is our second home — the first Mayvn opened in Edinburgh — and the London branch was shaped around one simple intention: to create the conditions for clarity, creativity and connection over remarkably good coffee.

What "Mayvn" means

Mayvn means connoisseur in Hebrew — and that word runs through everything we do. It's in the coffee, the pastries, the food and right down to the crockery you drink from. We work with independent stockists and suppliers because quality, to us, isn't a finishing touch. It's the whole point.

How Mayvn came to be

Mayvn is the second business of our founder, Jason Harvey. Jason began in the coffee trade with Common Coffee, a speciality roaster based at Rosemains Steading in Midlothian, just outside Edinburgh. His mission there was to make exceptional coffee more accessible… and along the way, he became just as interested in coffee as a way to connect people.

The café itself began with a chance LinkedIn message. Jason is originally from New Zealand, and wanted to connect with the New Zealand business community in the UK. That introduction led him to the Ten Four team — a New Zealand–owned workspace company opening in Edinburgh — and to the idea of building a calm, design-led café alongside their space. Fifteen months on, Ten Four opened a new London workspace on Pentonville Road, with a second Mayvn on the ground floor.

"I wanted to create a space where people meet, ideas grow and connections form. A calm, peaceful space to support working, focus or unwinding. In a future shaped by technology, we'll need places that celebrate the human spirit, that's the intention of Mayvn: a café where you can arrive as you are, settle in and feel looked after." — Jason Harvey, founder.

Designed to make you stay

The first thing people notice when they walk into Mayvn is the ceiling. It's a sculptural, pixelated form crafted from varying lengths of European oak dowels, flowing into a wave-like shape that draws the eye and gives the room its identity. It does more than look striking. It softens the atmosphere, adds warmth and anchors the space with a sense of flow and depth.

Everything else follows the same thinking: warm materials, good natural light and a layout designed to support both connection and clarity. We call it purposeful hospitality. The aim is that you feel relaxed, looked after and free to settle in. Whether that's for a meaningful conversation or a few hours of focused work.

Cafés have always been where ideas happen

Cafés have held a special place in society for centuries. Not just as places to drink coffee, but as gathering points for ideas, creativity and connection. From the Enlightenment coffee houses of 17th-century Europe, where writers, thinkers and entrepreneurs debated the issues of the day, to the cafés that act as hubs for collaboration today, they've always been spaces where culture is shaped and progress is born.

Mayvn carries that tradition forward. The food and coffee are fuel for creativity; the service is personal enough to help ideas come to life and connect the people who shape them. In a future where AI and automation keep expanding what's possible, we believe we'll crave spaces that celebrate the human spirit. Mayvn is built to be that space and the ambition behind it is a bold one: to become the world's most loved meeting spot.

A café and a meeting space — open to everyone

Here's the thing worth saying plainly: Mayvn is a café and a place to meet, open to all. You don't need to be a member of anything to walk in. The Ten Four co-working space is separate; Mayvn is the café on the ground floor, and the door is open to the whole neighbourhood, for a flat white, a catch-up, a client meeting or a quiet morning with your laptop.

It's the perfect setting for the things that matter most in a working week: a proper conversation, a small meeting that doesn't feel corporate, or the kind of unhurried hour where good ideas tend to show up. Connection is what we're here for.

Independent to the core

The coffee is our own, from Common Coffee. The pastries come from Lockdown Bakery, a fellow New Zealand independent favourite. And as much as we can, the suppliers behind everything else are independent too. Backing other small makers is part of what makes Mayvn a genuine neighbourhood place rather than just another café.

Come and settle in

Mayvn is at 4 Pentonville Road, London N1 9HF, open weekdays from 7:30am. Come in, order something made with care, find a seat under the oak, and stay as long as you like.
